FAQ
-
What qualifies as an emergency call?
Any no heat condition with the highest priority given to customers with no heat in any weather condition below freezing. A summer-time emergency would include failed air conditioning equipment in commercial businesses and residences requiring cooling for medical equipment. Any plumbing leaks or backups of any kind. No hot water is generally not considered a true emergency. We are available 24/7/365 for your peace of mind.

My furnace is running but only blowing cold air. What should I do?
Your furnace or central heat pump system more than likely is experiencing a failure-to-fire condition which has placed the system either in a soft or hard lockout. This could be caused by a clogged filter, ignition failure, failed blower motor, frozen exhaust or clogged condensate drain. If you’re getting cold air from your vents, give us a call to diagnose and resolve your problem.
-
Can a power outage damage my HVAC system?
Storm-related outages and power surges can damage circuit boards, especially in ductless inverter heat pump systems without the use of a “buck boost transformer” or over current protection device either installed on your main electrical panel or at the disconnect serving that piece of equipment. In southern Maine, depending on the town, supply voltages already run high at 249-251 volts. Most 240V equipment damage occurs above 253 volts, even for a split second. Improper grounding during installation or from rodents can cause the “signal ground” to be lost causing the unit to spike current and cause inverter losses.

How do I prevent emergency situations from happening?
Certain events, like power outages can’t be avoided, but you can take the proper steps to reduce the likelyhood of an emergency occuring. Annual, bi-annual (seasonal) or quarterly maintenance is the best prevention tactic to identify problems before they occur. Our technicians will look for any signs of wear and test equipment during servicing to catch worn components or airflow issues before they get worse. With heating equipment, its best practice to keep any combustibles at least 18-24” away (state code). Heat pump condensers shouldn’t be blocked with plants nor should multiple condensers be rejecting heat or blowing air into each other.

How often should I schedule maintenance or service?
For most oil and gas-fired heating or water heateing equipment once a year is suitable. Generally before the start of “true heating season”. August-October is ideal, but ultimately is determined by scheduling constraints. Heat Pumps or air conditioning only equipment tied into central air systems can either be once or twice a year depending on your homes’ needs. Ductless heat pumps in a residential setting are typically once a year however when installed in a commercial setting could be as high as quarterly depending on where the indoor unit is installed. Heat pump water heaters are often the most overlooked system. We will flush the tanks every year and remove the top cap of the system to clean the heat pump and replace the anode rod if necessary. Unfortunately we’ve seen many water heaters die early due to improper regular service.
